Psychology Idea Box is for Social Change!
In support to the worldwide movement for social change, the idea box of the SISC College Library presents “The Proponents in Psychology and the Defense Mechanisms.”
Psychology develops the critical thinking skills that are important in business, law, and other professions. Everyone uses psychology on a daily basis, whether they are talking with friends, arguing with a partner, or disciplining their children. Most people just don’t realize the science behind their decisions. Understanding how your mind works helps in everyday life by allowing you to build strong relationships and make the best decisions.
Psychologists contribute to the well-being of society by helping people understand their emotions and behaviors and managing them to lead a better life. The contribution of a psychologist is present at every stage of human life, from babyhood to old age. From enabling children to perform better at school to empowering adults to cope with relationships and life events, a psychologist's role in society is invaluable.
Knowing more about the famous proponents in psychology will make you understand more of the theories that you did not know you are actually believing and practicing. Aside from these, people experience anxiety, aggression, insecurity and other emotions that make them feel different from the others. However, little do we know that people use different resonings or mechanisms to cope with these situations.
Defense mechanisms are part of our everyday life. These are just unconscious protective measure to prevent you from connecting with your ravenous instinctual desires. These also protect you from the anxiety of confronting your weaknesses and foibles.
Even if you're not a Freudian by philosophy or training, you've got to admit that there's something to be said for the idea that everyone engages in some form of self-deception at least some of the time.
The question is—can you detect the form of deception that you, your friends, colleagues, and family are using at any given moment? You may never rid yourself of all your defense mechanisms, but at least you can grow from understanding what they can, and cannot, do for you.
