3rd IDEA Box is about Human Rights

Working in the library, I have to do a lot of tasks. One of them is designing especially the main entrance area and the viewing room. The theme assigned to me was ‘Human Rights’.

When the task was given to me, I didn’t know what kind of design I’ll make. I’m not pretty much in designing but since I’m the only assistant here, I have no choice but to do it. I searched for articles, relevant people, and the violations on human rights. There’s a lot of violations made and about human rights so I needed to choose the most common and always seen in public especially in TV or media. Violations include rape, murder, homicide, child abuse, abuse of women, mass killing, etc. These are displayed near the stairs going up the library.

Done with the main idea about human rights so I needed to break down the information for display in the IDEA Box room. I chose top personalities who fought and protect people from human abuse. Four of them are as follows:

  • Malala Yousafzai, Pakistani schoolgirl who defied threats of the Taliban to campaign for the right to education for girls;

  • Mahatma Gandhi, Indian nationalist and politician, who struggled for Indian self-determination and independence;

  • Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid leader, who spent over twenty years in jail for his opposition to the racist apartheid system which excluded blacks from many areas of society); and,

  • Martin Luther King, also anti-apartheid leader, and more.

I included also the top most number of attacks on human rights in the year 2016-2017. I’m happy that Philippines is not included but I feel sad that there’s a lot of abominations happening in this world.

At the start of 2017, violations of human rights in the Philippines were also rising. Killing is everywhere especially in Marawi where the government military fight with the Jihadist militant or ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria). There is also the ‘War on Drugs’ which claims lives of many people.

There are so many abuses and violations of human rights in this world. As a student and as a man with faith, I can rise and fight for human rights just by studying hard, finishing my studies, and having a decent job in the future.

After all, I learned a lot by just designing the entrance and the room of the library and such work helps me and make my stay in the library worthwhile.
