Risk managing the libraries
Are libraries at risk? What if e-resources disappear suddenly from databases we currently access? Will we be able to sustain and augment library holdings for the next ten years? Would we have the same people then? Does the present inventory scheme have the appropriate technology to achieve zero losses? All these and more have allowed Mr. Roderick B. Ramos, College Library coordinator to reflect during the 2 full day "Risk-Based Thingking" Management System Approach for ISO 9001-2015 held on April 18 to 19, 2018, MPH College Building and SOF Room, Southville International School and Colleges.
Risk is not a new phenomenon nor the latest management jargon. It occurs in all aspects of business. British Library (2018) defines risk as: “Any internal or external event that might adversely affect the ability of the Library to achieve its strategy, policy or operational goals.”
Being prepared is always a nice thing to do, said Mr. Ramos. This special activity with ISO consultant/coach Mr. Jayzer Aquino has allowed one to acquire the art and discipline of doing RISK and OPPORTUNITIES REGISTERS which definitely reflects and records identified risks and or opportunities, their severity, and the actions/steps to be taken.
Risk-based thinking begins and ends with the desire to fulfill and manage 3Cs: (1) satisfy customer service (2) continuing and never ending improvement (3) Consistent delivery of care.
Internalizing what I have learned and acquired, ISO 31000 have critical elements for managing risks:
Risk Identification, ientifying the sources of risks, risk events, and their potential consequences;
Risk Analysis, analyzing the causes and sources of risks and he likelihood that they will occur;
Risk Evaluation, determines whether risks need to be addresses and treated; and,
Risk Treatment, determines strategies and tactics to miotigate or control risks
